Vinyl Printers FAQs

What materials can I print on?

Vinyl printers can print onto an extensive range of materials including, self-adhesive vinyl, PVC banner, roll-up and pop-up, canvas, coated papers, contra-vision, static cling, clear vinyl, t-shirt vinyl. UV printer printers can print onto an even wider range of materials due to the ink technology.

Do I need a media winder?

It depends on the type of printing you are doing. The media winder is designed for rolling up the prints on longer runs and unattended printing. Ideally anything over 1.5m in length would benefit from using a media winder, to keep the prints clean and off the floor. It is also possible to use the media winder when doing long runs of labels, using a special mode on the machines.

UV or eco-solvent?

Eco-solvent is widely used for vehicle wrapping application due to the properties of the ink and how it interacts and bonds to the media. Eco-solvent typically has a glossy finish and feels part of the substrate that you are printing onto. It may need to be laminated depending on the application. You will need to allow gassing-off time before laminating or applying onto a board.

UV is rising in popularity due to its instantly dry characteristics, which mean that you can instantly run it through a finishing process. The printed product is more dimensionally stable, so less shrinkage when cutting into the print. The ink is also very durable and scratch resistant which results in less need for lamination. The ink has more of a matte finish to it, but due to the ink technology, it enables printing onto a very wide range of materials, that other technologies can’t reach.
